Yoga-- Helping In Sickness and In HealthIt’s been almost 4 years and has involved countless surgeries and endless physical therapy, but Ari Steinfeld is still determined to get his legs back to health after a devastating accident caused major damage to his legs.

As an article on Health.com notes, in 2010, he and his then-fiancée were struck by a car and severely injured. Ari suffered traumatic injury to his leg. It was recently reported that the doctors who treated him “were initially focused on saving Steinfeld’s life and weren’t sure if they would be able to save his leg, too.”

In all, Steinfeld had 10 surgeries, including major operations to implant a metal rod in his leg and to take abdominal muscle from either side of his abdomen to replace the muscles that had been severed in his leg.

So what was the main activity that ultimately got Ari through the healing process?

Yoga.

Yoga not only contributed to helping his leg to heal–it’s also keeping him in a positive mental state that gives him the motivation and optimism of getting complete range of motion back in his leg. In fact, it continues to help him, and he considers it part of the physical therapy process. As the article continues to mention, “Steinfeld currently doesn’t have full range of motion with his knee, but hopes that through yoga he can get that back. His ankle also has a limited range of motion, but that may always be there.”

Ari Steinfeld has been at it, practicing yoga for several years before the accident, and he says that is what has helped him to get where he is today. His demeanor is much more positive and that has helped him to get his legs back to health.

When the accident occurred, his goal was to be able to walk at his wedding the following year. Not only was he able to do that, but he has also been around helping others in his situation.

Ari’s situation is a reminder that maintaining your positive health is a lifetime activity–it’s not something that you do when you feel like it, or only when you have an injury. Were he not already doing yoga, this situation could’ve been much different. Yoga has a lot of health benefits, and there’s no reason not to start doing it now!

Going into 2014, as you set your yearly goals, be grateful for your healthy legs, and stay positive to make sure you can achieve them. There are many ways you can do that, from walking and running to yoga. No matter what you do, challenge yourself and don’t give up. Enjoy the year ahead!
