Get Up and Get Out! Upcoming Omaha 5KsStaying in shape is a sure-fire way to keep your spider veins and varicose veins under control. But as the heat starts to kick it into high gear, it can be hard to get ourselves to actually commit. With 4th of July coming up, though, there are many celebratory races that can make running a fun time. You don’t have to set any records–just have fun and move your legs.

Omaha comes alive with road races from now through Fall. Even if you don’t feel up to the challenge of doing a race coming up, find a running group to get you motivated for the Fall. Many of these groups meet before or after work, so you can easily work running into your schedule.

Here are two upcoming 5Ks in the Omaha area:

  • Independence day fun run: 7/2/13: Celebrate Independence Day with a free four mile run on the Field Club trail. Wear a patriotic costume to be entered into the costume contest!
  • Omaha 5K patriot run: 7/4/13: Run a 5K fun run or a 1 mile family run at the Keystone Trail. This fun race should be a great, patriotic way to get out and be active this independence day. Registration is $33, register here.

Either of these races would be a great way to get active, and maybe even go out and run with your family if you can get them up off the couch. If so, we have some tips.

There are many resources out there to help you find a fun run in different parts of Nebraska that will give you a different “view” of some really fun towns. And while you’re signing up for a race, get the family involved–after all, spider veins and varicose veins are hereditary. Getting out and moving (you don’t have to run these races, you can easily walk) will help to keep your legs circulating and reduce the possibility of developing spider veins.

Either way, the benefits of staying active throughout the summer are endless. Being a part of a local event adds fun and excitement to an everyday activity. In most cases, you can even find a race that goes towards a good cause. So long as your legs are moving and blood is flowing, you are helping to reduce the onset of spider veins and varicose veins.

Grab some friends, get your family out of the house, and take advantage of the summer. And heat is not your excuse either–most races are early morning, so you can be finished running and have your morning coffee before you would normally be awake. What better feeling is there than that?

Find a race that is comfortable for you and start training. Stay motivated and stay active, and before you know it, you will be signing up for local races until the first snow (let’s just hope it doesn’t hit in October again).
